It's Been A While...

Oh yes, it has been awhile since I poured out my thoughts and feelings about all the daily sports junk that interest me and those of you. I apologize for that but with a recent busy schedule including; college graduation, Christmas, New Years, my friends wedding, my wedding, and our honeymoon in Jamaica, I haven't seen the Internet of a keyboard in a few weeks. But no excuses...
While I was sitting on the beach in Ocho Rios, Jamaica in the Grand Riviera, sipping on Red Stripe and soaking up the sun, I was able to watch the strangest sport. A sport that I have heard of before but never really seen it played anywhere. The sport of Cricket. For the life of me I could not figure out why these easy going, fun loving, I reggae thumping, paradise junkies, Jamaicans loved this sport. These grown men wearing what seemed like a cross between hockey and football pads, swinging flat bats at a ball thrown by a man in a flamboyant fashion.  I wanted to learn this sport so I watched it right outside of this sports bar on the beach daily. With  every urge I tried to not think of it as baseball but I couldn't shake it, I had many people try to explain it to me why the game is played the way it is, and all the rules and such. But I just couldn't grasp it, it just didn't make any sense. I would like to say I learned about this sport and enjoyed it. I would like for this short piece to be about how the game is enjoyed by countries like Jamaica. I would like to write this piece about how the game is played. But I can't, and I like it that way. You see, what I have come to figure out is that I love purely intense American sports. There's a reason why arguably the most powerful country hasn't adopted sports like this as one of their past times. It's just plain boring, we want as Americans cocky athletes hitting each other at full force, scoring lots of points, people throwing a ball with two hands down through a metal hoop in an aggressive fashion, and people hitting little white orbs 400 feet into screaming fans then trot around in a circle gloating. We are Americans and we do it big. So yes its arrogant and intolerant of me to write this about another cultures past time, but I don't care, I am American and I love American sports. So my advice is, when you go abroad and see new sports don't worrying about learning them because it really doesn't matter once you are back in the states. Also, who cares, not likely you'll every see it on ESPN. If you don't like my advice or opinions, I don't care, I'll sit back drink a Red Stripe and flip my TV onto football, do you know why? Because I am an American and proud of it. I do it BIG.
